Orangutans at Camp Leakey, reached on a klotok houseboat from Kumai, near Pangkalan Bun. Most trips last two or three days on the river.

Location

Visitor guide

Getting there

Fly to Pangkalan Bun, then about 35 minutes by road to the port of Kumai, where river boats called klotok start.

What to do

  • Travel up the river by klotok, which is also where you eat and sleep.
  • See orangutans at the feeding stations, including Pondok Tanggui and Camp Leakey, founded in 1971.
  • Look for proboscis monkeys along the river banks.

The weather here

Rain rarely stops a klotok, but storms make the forest walks to the feeding stations muddy. Smoke from fires can reach this area in dry years: check the smoke forecast before you go.

Good to know

  • The park covers about 3,040 km² in Central Kalimantan; trips are usually arranged with a guide and a klotok from Kumai.
