Visitor guide
Getting there
About 92 km from Kota Kinabalu by road. The park headquarters is at about 1,520 m, and Poring Hot Springs, part of the same park, is in Ranau district.
What to do
- Climb Mount Kinabalu (4,095 m) with a registered mountain guide: two days is possible, three is recommended to get used to the altitude.
- Without climbing: nature walks and the botanical garden at headquarters.
- Poring Hot Springs: forest walks, gardens and hot baths in the lowland part of the park.
The weather here
It is much cooler up high, and cold at the summit before dawn: bring warm, waterproof layers. Cloud and rain usually build through the afternoon, so walks start early.
Good to know
- Climbs are booked through Sabah Parks together with the Laban Rata accommodation, and permits are limited: book early.
- Climbers wear their permit tag and show it at Timpohon Gate, Laban Rata and Sayat-Sayat.
- Kinabalu Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
