Sarawak’s oldest national park, reached only by boat from Kampung Bako: proboscis monkeys, beaches and sea stacks. Boats depend on the tide and the sea.
Visitor guide
Getting there
By road from Kuching to the boat jetty at Kampung Bako, then about 20 to 30 minutes by small boat across the estuary and along the coast to the park headquarters at Telok Assam.
What to do
- Walk some of the 18 colour-coded trails, from short walks to full-day hikes.
- Look for proboscis monkeys, long-tailed macaques, silvered langurs and bearded pigs; over 190 bird species have been recorded.
- See the sea stacks, cliffs and beaches such as Pandan Kecil, and pitcher plants on the heath forest trails.
- Stay overnight in the park chalets and join a guided night walk.
The weather here
The boat trip depends on the tide and the sea: boats may not run at very low tide or in rough water, so check the tide and go early. Afternoon storms are common, and trails get slippery after rain.
Good to know
- Register online with Sarawak Forestry before you visit, and book chalets in advance.
- Bako is Sarawak’s oldest national park and was named an ASEAN Heritage Park in September 2025.
